SET Events for Students

Upcoming Collegewide events relating to science, engineering, and technology

Thursday, September 11, 2025, 6:00 p.m.
Germantown Campus, Globe Hall
Open to the public

UNESCO has identified 2025 as the International Year of Quantum.  NIST and MC are contributing to this year, in part, with a series of talks to students and the general public.   The next talk in the NIST-Quantum speaker series is "Behind the Q-Ball: Quantum Physics, Games, and the Re-Invention of Cryptography"

The speaker is Dr Carl Miller.   Dr. Miller is a graduate of Wood Acres Elementary School in Bethesda, MD, where he was introduced to some fun number puzzles and decided to become a mathematician.  A couple of decades later as a postdoc at the University of Michigan, he encountered quantum information, an area with equally interesting puzzles to solve and a terrific intellectually diverse community.  Carl is a co-director of the Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS) at the University of Maryland, and a staff scientist at NIST.

We hope that you will be able to join us on Sept 11.
